May 12, 2017 News

Happy birthday to Minnesota!  Minnesota turned 159 years old on May 11th.  We were able to enjoy our state food and drink for snack (blueberry muffin and milk).  In honor of Minnesota’s birthday, we began doing some research on our state symbols.  Be sure to ask your child what (s)he has learned so far.  We will continue this research next week.

Are you ready to learn about many notable Minnesotans this afternoon at our Wax Museum?  If you are able, come join us at 2:30pm for our Doggy DJs Wax Museum.  We look forward to seeing you!

We have also been knee-deep in our Minnesota map study.  Most of the children are about hallway through the completion of their map, which is the first step on their way to the cookie project!  Next week, we will finish up the maps and look at important geographical features that children need to know and we will prepare for our map quiz.

This week in math, we began our Fractions chapter.  The children have been very excited to finally get to fractions!  We will continue this across the next two weeks.  Homework will consist of practice with fractions and studying the basic facts (all four operations).  Soon, we will have our spring assessment on the basic math facts.

Our Word Study sorts will conclude next week.  We will spend the rest of the year brushing up on some grammar skills, along with assessments.

Important Events
Field Day is next Friday, May 19th.  Our lunch is 12:15-12:45pm and the activities will take place from 1-3pm.  The theme is “Land of 10,000 Lakes” so children are encouraged to wear blue.  It is a non-uniform day (dress in comfortable clothes and tennis shoes).  Children should also bring a water bottle and hat/sunglasses if they wish.  Join us for lunch and the activities if you are able!

There will be a READ-IN on Monday, May 22nd at 8:40am outside (weather permitting) on the Ottawa Ave soccer field.  Students can bring a beach towel/blanket to sit on and a variety of books to read.

There will be no school on Monday, May 29th for Memorial Day.

MN Movie (Amazing Race Destination Project) will be shown in the Theater on Wednesday, May 31st at 1:30pm.  The movie will be approximately an hour.  Immediately following the movie, we will head back to the classroom for the children to recap their year with you!  They can share their Portfolios, various projects, and have your help packing up materials.  J

Thursday, June 1st will be a non-uniform day for everyone.

Friday, June 2 will be a full day of school with our Lower School Closing Program at 1:30pm in the Chapel.  Children should come dressed in semi-dressy attire.  There will be a reception immediately following the program.
